Keep the finished record somewhere off-site — cloud storage or your email — so it survives the loss it documents.
Before you start
- Find your policy and note the coverage limits.
- Note any category caps — jewelry, cash, firearms, and collectibles are common.
- Flag items that may need a separate rider or appraisal.
- Gather receipts and manuals you already have.
Record for each item
- A clear photo of the item.
- What it is — brand and model where they matter.
- Estimated replacement cost (new).
- Purchase date, for high-value items.
- Serial number, for electronics, appliances, tools, and bikes.
